DJ POPS’ 45 OF THE WEEK: MONEY

One day my friend Jon came with about 200 records he wanted to get rid of.

The plan was for me to go through the boxes, pick out a few that I liked, and he would then sell the rest of them at the Beachland Ballroom’s Flea Market. What ended up happening was me buying every single last one of them for a decent price that was beneficial for the both of us.

There was a ton of good stuff in there but the one that immediately caught my ear was Don Covay doing an EXTREMELY funky send up of Barrett Strong’s song Money. He completely nixed the background vocals, replaced the piano with a dirty organ, and sang it like he was a pimp talking to a prostitute. It just might be the funkiest song I’ve ever heard and that’s a pretty bold statement from a Soul DJ.
