Last year Secret Soul Club was spinning a pretty wild Halloween party at an art gallery. I was dressed as LL Cool J, complete with a Kangol hat and a very dookie gold chain. Tom busted this out and my first thought was, “DAMN! Who the hell is this?” He told me that it was the one-and-only Soul Brother #1, and I instantly became a fan.

This is earlier James Brown stuff with the Fabulous Flames, before he had the JBs, but it’s just as funky. What surprised me most is that Brown played organ on this track. And this isn’t an isolated incident. I’ve since taken to collecting anything he’s done instrumentally because it’s always gold. Enjoy!!
