DJ POPS’ 45 OF THE WEEK: KEEP IT TO YOURSELF

DJ POPS’ 45 OF THE WEEK: KEEP IT TO YOURSELF

I was listening to this song the other day and something didn’t quite sit right.

Its got a hyperactive bassline, a solid gospel vibe, and a woman singing as if her life depended on it. What’s not to like, right? Well, I started playing it over and over again and it struck me. This song is super scandalous!

Let’s back up a bit. Margie Hendricks, the girl singing this song, was in a long term love affair with Ray Charles, and this song is shouting to the whole world about it. It’s a passionate plea for everyone around them to stay out of their business and leave their love alone, even though it was really, really wrong. Keep in mind that Ray was married, not planning on leaving his wife, and probably had to produce this song in the studio. It almost makes my head explode. If I were having an affair, I wouldn’t be okay with a girl singing a song about it, and I certainly wouldn’t produce/play on it so people would find out. It’s a super cool song though. Enjoy!
