Regional Fashion Weeks have gained significant popularity in recent years and are now on the radar of many of the world’s top designers and fashion experts. Fashion industry leader Fern Mallis, who created the current New York Fashion Week and is the keynote speaker in this year’s Cleveland event, told CNN in 2013, “Not all designers are born and bred in New York, Paris and Milan,” and she finds “something very honest and refreshing” about them: “The fashion industry is always looking for the next hot talent and you never know where you’ll find it.”
Regional Fashion Weeks give emerging designers and runway models exposure in the industry and the fashion press, opportunities they won’t find in New York or Paris. Fashion design is often influenced by the aesthetics and the weather of the region designers come from – heavier, more rustic fabrics in the north, lighter fabrics like chiffon and cotton in the south – regional Fashion Weeks make regional customers’ tastes and needs a priority.
